All entry-level lawyers must successfully complete bootcamp between nine and eleven months of being placed. Bootcamp is a six-day, intensive trial skills program. Each bootcamp is limited to a maximum of eight students. Each student brings a felony case from his or her caseload and uses that case throughout the week. The week begins on Sunday with brainstorming theories and themes. This is followed by workshops on motions practice and jury instructions; voir dire with jurors from the community; opening statements; a workshop on challenges for cause; and practicing direct and cross examination. Bootcamp concludes on Friday with closing arguments. Faculty from the system provide feedback throughout the week. Bootcamp is both educational and evaluative, and lawyers must meet the Colorado State Public Defender’s practice standards in order to progress into district court.
